The Experimental Television Center is pleased to announce the upcoming release of ETC: Experimental Television Center 1969-2009, a five DVD set presenting the electronic media work of over one hundred artists who have worked in the Center’s Residency Program during the last 40 years. The collection offers a look at the evolution of the unique artist-designed sound and image tools that are the hallmark of the Center’s studio and provides a view into the constantly changing artistic processes and practices that have shaped the work over the years. The set is being distributed by Electronic Arts Intermix. Video art began to develop in the US in the late 1960s, with the introduction of new portable video tools. While many artists used the technology to document and have voice in social and political issues, others collaborated with technologists to design unique instruments which allowed the creation of imagery never before seen. ETC remains dedicated to the development of video and digital instruments in the service of creative visual and sonic investigation by artists from around the world. This set contains works by the first generation of video and film artists – including Barbara Hammer, Gary Hill, Jud Yalkut and Aldo Tambellini - as well as contemporary works by Marisa Olson, Kristin Lucas, Lynne Sachs and Mark Street. The complete list of artists is below. A 132 page catalog is also included. The works have been widely exhibited internationally and received awards from festivals around the world. For about 40 years the Center has offered programs in support of the media arts, offering an international residency Program, grants to individuals and media organizations, and sponsorship assistance for independent media and film artists. The Video History Web is an online resource for scholars concerning the formative development of media art and community television. An essential component of the project, the digitizing of early video works recorded on obsolete formats, was performed through the Standby Program by Bill Seery. We also wish to recognize Maria Venuto and Kelly Spivey for their contributions. The newly digitized ETC works are archived at Cornell University Rose Goldsen Archive of New Media, to be made available to the public for research purposes. Work 1969 -1986 Ralph I. Hocking I. The Experiment (8 min) was the first tape I remember saving. The premise was to bring the machines into a room and do something. I don't know what prompted the notion of re-recording. The degradation of each generation both in audio and video was something I didn't expect. The richness of the video globbing into wads of movement was new to me. It was all new to me. I was working within the restrictions of being able to record only on the portable unit and watching the results only on a separate playback unit while recording all of it again. I was determined to find something in these tools as I had in the potters machinery and still film camera. Nothing was scripted. I have never done that. Happenstance is my guide. It was all staged. Everything is, of course. Unless you are dedicated to sneaky "candid camera caughtcha" recording and I am not. The rights of each individual are too important to behave aggressively with cameras. Suck don't Shoot and only when everyone is aware and agrees with the notion. Time was defined by the length of the tape. About twenty minutes. You are watching an unedited portion from the beginning of the tape until I stopped it. There are no edits within the portion that you are watching. 2. Fishing (9:50 min) is the result of setting up a portable camera and recorder near Sag Harbor NY. Dom _ decided . I would It started half. The image is nowhere near the original due to that which we pursue and are pursued by. Time. It helped me to realize the importance of the activity in front of the lens when videotaping. And the intention of the TV industry to entertain. Where everything must entertain. Shocking to hear Beethoven's Fifth at the bottom of the sea with Jacques Cousteau on PBS. Or at least odd. I suggest unnecessary and misleading. By this time tapes (second generation Sony) were a half hour long. There are three edits. I think it is one of my best efforts. 3. Second Bach Dance (1:16 min) is one of a series of explorations concerning the culture, my reaction to it, sex and Sherry's reaction to seeing herself live, doubled and imposed on top of a basketball game. We also took the same approach to the Watergate hearings with some odd results. No edits. The Bach was troublesome. Stealing the music was not honorable. Stealing the ball game didn't matter. I gave up stealing anything and used only my inventions. The reason for referring to the edit situation is that most thing that are constructed today are heavily edited and processed and edited and voice overed and music tracked and edited and edited. In the beginning we had no ability to edit so we worked in such a way that only considered what we saw at the time. Sherry could see herself in all of our collaborations and reacted as she saw fit. I manipulated the machines in response to what I saw. Later (now) I'm making decisions about the length of material but not rearranging time or re-processing imagery. Often several versions were made rather than trying to doctor the failures of one attempt. 4. Sitting by the Window (4:19 min) 5. Scrambled Legs (3:31 min) both play with a common control used in electronic image making, switching. Lots of cameras and a switching interface controlling them. Switching from one image to another. All commercial image switching was done during the vertical interval. That occurs after the frame or the field is completely written. Most commonly it is the time it takes for the guns that spit out the electrons onto the cathode ray tube to get from the bottom back to the top of the image in order to write, construct the next frame or field. During that time the gun is turned off (V blanking) At a much faster pace the same thing happens on each line of the image. Field and frame (frame—2 fields—raster) and the gun turns off each time the line is written and the gun returns to the left to spit out the next line (H blanking). It takes 1160th of a second to spit one field. 262.5 lines one odd numbered one even numbered. It takes 1/30th of a second to spit one frame. 525 lines. It takes 1/15, 734 of a second to spit one line. Stuff moves fast. We subverted the industrial approach to see what might happen. These tapes had six? cameras connected to a switcher that was governed by oscillators that could range well above the horizontal (line) rate of sync. This allowed putting a portion of several cameras images on one line. Much different than masking the change in the vertical interval as did industrial standards. No edits. 6. Ovals (29:34 min) is a kind of compilation of short ideas that seemed to have a common ground. One of the standing jokes on "Computer Sunday" (Booze, weed, food and programming, I cooked.) was the inability to make a circle with our oscillators. It had to do with the height to width ratio of the television raster (the screen lines). I came to prefer the oval shape since it was female. Many of these segments were manufactured by using a bank of David Jones/Richard Brewster built oscillators, mixers, amplifiers, patch matrix and a Paik/Abe colonizer. Oscillators are sort of the base material of the TV/Video experience. You can draw with them and govern their behavior by controlling them with each other through a process called voltage control. Video came to this by the example of audio synthesis. Moog, Arp, Synthi, and so on. Instead of hearing the oscillators you see them. Or both depending on the frequency of the oscillator. Shapes are governed by the mix of adjustable sine, square and triangle waveforms. If you allow the technology of TV/Video to be simplified then much can be understood about controlling the raw material. There really isn't much to control. How much and how often are the basis for most of it. Amplitude and Frequency. Complexity develops within the control and the character of the machine. I prefer to set up a patch (wires going between various points of input and output) and let the machine determine what happens. Retaining the potential to interfere of course. The outcome is always a surprise and sometimes one that is wonderful. A camera was used in the obvious parts where you see a person, otherwise this is all done without using a camera. 7. Slow-Scan (17:23 min) was made using a forerunner of the fax machine. Industrial machines were often a point of departure . Industrial surplus was our basic way of acquiring tools to work with since new stuff was way beyond our financial ability. It was able to transmit low resolution images over telephone lines by having a video camera view a document or photograph and slowly record onto an erasable disc what ever it was pointed It took several seconds for the image to be completed. If the camera or the image moved during that time then smearing would take place. A frozen still could be played with creating a kind of animation. I set up a situation and Sherry reacted to what she saw in a live monitor. No edits. No audio. 8• Pixel-Series (8:40 min) is an extension of the Ovals approach. It involves early computer control. Trying to get the computer to make visual stuff. I guess the analogy would be to painting but using time also. I remember a conversation with David Jones and Paul Davis during one of our •computer Sundays". To me, it seemed not interesting to sit in front of a keyboard trying to control a computer with a language to do visual art. Another layer of translation needed in order to do what a fingers could do without language. My question was based on extending the control of the machine out to knobs and ins and outs that could be patched into analog signals and not using the keyboard. They made it work and I used it for several tapes. No camera involved. No edits. 9. Walk/Run (6:00 min) Editing machines became affordable so we got some. Pushing buttons to insert on the fly was interesting so David Jones built an interface that allowed oscillators to become the faster than human button pusher. Square waves worked pretty well as I remember. A copy of the original tape was made and fed back onto the original notion but slightly offset in time. The machines did the rest with no human interference or assumptions. It was done with a grant from WNET. I wonder if they ever broadcast it? Hundreds of edits. 10. Untitled Frame Buffer (13:52 min) Another extension of the Ovals/Pixel stuff. David Jones built a digital frame buffer that was used in this and the next two tapes. For years, every day I would get up in the morning and set up a patch on whatever machine or machines I was working with and let it run all day. Watching it occasionally and interfering when it seemed not interesting. Little of this was recorded but this tape is one time that it was recorded. The first of this approach was done with feedback using a black and white camera and monitor. I referred to it as my pet, sort of like having a dog to play with. 11) Mixtape Series (12:55 min) This is an attempt to use all of the wrong parts of television. It reveals and is paying attention to the importance of the experience of the eyes and ears. It has no patience with what still serves as conventions of television or what is rising in the computer world. An emulation and elevation of the wrong parts of television for the wrong reasons. Special Effects sell soap. As does music. This work uses the rejected and covered up to explore the uniqueness of the TV medium. ReScan was and is interesting. GenLock is too. 12. Nude Narrative (6:09 min) This is the silliest tape in the group. Giving in to cultural crap, getting pissed and coming up with this. Very entertaining. Back to stealing. It proves that randomness has better chance for ideas than deliberate self righteous indignation. Wordy as is most of what we watch. What happened to radio? I quit making tapes after this one. Sold the frame buffer and went on to computers and back to photography. It is unfortunate that, historically, the law and the legal system have been accessible to a privileged few in America. It would be incredible to have the time and the resources to work through the landmark cases and make the process of historical legal reasoning visual and accessible to everyone."  GREEN CLOUDS TEMPLE ITERATION 2 / STORM (3RD ITERATION)  7.5 MINS AND 5.5 MINS - DIGITALLY PROCESSED VIDEO - 2012  DEBORA BERNAGOZZI is an artist who lives in Rochester and creates experimental and documentary work in the mediums of video and photography. During this residency, she has been using Max/MSP/Jitter to custom build an interface for digital audio and video processing that mimics real-time analog video processes that Debora had been using as an artist in residence at the Experimental Television Center. Debora talks about the way RAAR has helped her turn a longstanding idea into a reality:  "l had said for several years that I wanted to learn to use Max/MSP/Jitter better, to be able to create my own tools. The closing of the Experimental Television Center made that idle wish a necessity. Having the residency as a set period devoted to achieving that goal made me focus in a new way." CRANE POND SERIES 1 / CRANE POND SERIES e / CRANE POND SERIES 3  3.5 MINS. 4 MINS 4.5 MINS - DIGITAL VIDEO - 2012  PAT CAIN is a multi-genre artist whose work Includes found sound sculpture, social sculptures, poetry, and movement. He says, "l have been hesitant to consider myself a visual artist and [RAAR] was the perfect opportunity to take the plunge. So I applied and was accepted and now i have to make something or I'm gong to look like a fool.' Along with making video works. Pat used his residency time to construct an interactive installation. Built in part out of scavenged plastic bags and mirrors, it encourages viewers to question their environment through sound, color, and shadow play  OVERGROWTH  19.5 MINS - DIGITALLY PROCESSED VIDEO - 2012  TOM STOLL has a PhD In music composition and is a seasoned programmer capable of building cool interactive mobile and audio apps. He has been using the residency time to build software using SuperCollider, OpenCV, and Openframeworks, and what he builds to an installation meditating on themes of growth and decay. He says of his evolving practice, am spending less and less time programming and mote and more time on composing and making images...My artistic practice has relied on major amounts of  time spent programming before I can make a piece.
