The future is not just about what’s next. It’s also about what we can build to ensure that what’s next matters. How can we, as resourceful, innovative, and knowledgeable local and global citizens build and participate in a desirable future in the face of global climate change, economic meltdown, political instability, and cultural divisiveness?

The 2010 01SJ Biennial is predicated on the notion that as artists, designers, engineers, architects, marketers, corporations and citizens we have the tools to (re)build the world, conceptually and actually, virtually and physically, poorly and better, aesthetically and pragmatically, in both large and small ways. 01SJ is about how powerful ideas and innovative individuals from around the world can make a difference and come together to build a unique and distributed city-wide platform for creative solutions and public engagement.

Under the theme “Build Your Own World,” ZER01, in collaboration with dozens of partners, will present over the course of 4 days, from September 16-19, hundreds of artworks, performances, events, and artist talks, which not only imagine the future of the world) but begin to build it.

Join us. Show us. Build it.

The Continuum Aesthetics Series looks at the aesthetic questions and issues raised by all major art forms. Stimulating, engaging and accessible, the series offers food for thought not only for students of aesthetics, but also for anyone with an interest in philosophy and the arts. Aesthetics and Music is a fresh and often provocative exploration of the key concepts and arguments in musical aesthetics. It draws on the rich heritage of the subject, while proposing distinctive new ways of thinking about music as an art form.
The book looks at:
The experience of listening
Rhythm and musical movement
What modernism has meant for musical aesthetics
The relation of music to other 'sound arts'
Improvisation and composition as well as more traditional issues in musical aesthetics such as absolute versus programme music and the question of musical formalism.

Thinkers discussed range from Pythagoras and Plato to Kant, Nietzsche and Adorno. Areas of music covered include classical, popular and traditional music, and jazz. Aesthetics and Music makes an eloquent case for a humanistic, democratic and genuinely aesthetic conception of music and musical understanding. Anyone interested in what contemporary philosophy has to say about music as an art form will find this thought-provoking and highly enjoyable book required reading.
> [less]

This volume - investigating the work of a particular photographer, in this case, Andre Kertesz - comprises a 4000-word essay by an expert in the field, 55 photographs presented chronologically, each with a commentary, and a biography of the featured photographer. Born in 1894 in Budapest, Andre Kertesz was one of the first photographers to take advantage of the spontaneity of perception that the camera affords. His unposed shots - of the Hungarian countryside, Parisian bistros, New York streets - are strongly graphic in character, with sharp diagonals and rich blacks and whites. This collection brings together photographs spanning his entire career and includes selections from his celebrated series of distortions; his portraits of Colette, Chagall, and other artists; and the strikingly beautiful shots he took of city streets from the vantage point of his window. A handsome new edition of the seminal collection of late-twentieth-century cultural criticism. Named a Best Book of the Year by the Village Voice and considered a bible of contemporary cultural criticism, The Anti-Aesthetic is reissued now in a handsome new paperback edition. For the past twenty years, Hal Foster has pushed the boundaries of cultural criticism, establishing a vantage point from which the seemingly disparate agendas of artists, patrons, and critics have a telling coherence. In The Anti-Aesthetic, preeminent critics such as Jean Baudrillard, Rosalind Krauss, Fredric Jameson, and Edward Said consider the full range of postmodern cultural production, from the writing of John Cage, to Cindy Sherman's film stills, to Barbara Kruger's collages. With a redesigned cover and a new afterword that situates the book in relation to contemporary criticism, The Anti-Aesthetic provides a strong introduction for newcomers and a point of reference for those already engaged in discussions of postmodern art, culture, and criticism. New afterword by Hal Foster; 12 b/w photographs. JEAN BAUDRILLARD, Professor of Sociology at the University of Paris, is the author of The Mirror of Production (Telos, 1975) and For a Critique of the Political Economy of the Sign (Telos, 1981). A detailed description of Antoni Gaudí - the man and his work Wherever they go, anyone who visits Barcelona today will come across the works of Antoni Gaudí - the architect who has attracted art-lovers from all over the world to Spain. It was here, in the capital of Catalonia, that the famous master of architecture produced nearly all of his works. Villas for the well-to-do bourgeoisie, the expansive Güell Park (which today is open to the public), and the famous church designed in honour of the Holy Family - a project which was begun over 100 years ago and has yet to be completed. Antoni Gaudí's life was full of contradictions. As a young man he joined the Catalonian nationalist movement and was critical of the church; toward the end of his life he devoted himself completely to the construction of one single church. As a young man Gaudí had a liking for the glamour of social life and the looks of a dandy; in old age, on the other hand, he lived a spartan life. Antoni Gaudí never married and devoted his life entirely to his art - architecture. His works have been acclaimed as "soothing oases in a desert of functional buildings", as "precious gems in the uniform grey of rows of houses," and the master himself was acclaimed as the "Dante of architecture". This book provides a detailed description of Gaudí the man and his work. The complete works are documented in a wide range of colour photos. [less]

Art has been the subject of more explosive experimentation in the last twenty years than in almost any other period. Not only have most preconceptions about art and the artist been questioned and sometimes overturned; whole new media and areas of artistic activity have been pioneered, especially since the advent of such technology as the PC, Xerox, video and lasers. This book reveals the various trends that have been spawned by these unprecedented innovations. Frank Popper divides the subject into five categories: laser and holographic art; video art; computer art; communication art; and installation, demonstration and performance art. He analyses each of these movements in terms of its objectives and those who take part in it. What is most fascinating about these works is that, although their creators are experimenting with ways and means undreamt of even fifty years ago, their objective is the same as that of artists since antiquity - to create a shared aesthetic experience. This study demonstrates that such art has not emerged out of the blue, but is a clear evolution from the art and artists that preceded it. Once that is understood, this new field can be assimilated, interpreted and enjoyed in accordance with its own standards. Frank Popper has been writing on contemporary art for almost thirty years. His books include "Die Kinetische Kunst" (Cologne, 1975) and "Electra: Electricity and Electronics in the Art of the 20th Century" (Musee d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris, 1983). [less]

Over the course of fifteen years, Nicholas Zurbrugg interviewed the avant-garde poets, filmmakers, dancers, writers, composers, and performance artists who were defying tradition, crossing genres, and forever changing how art would be created, performed, and interpreted. These conversations with thirty-one of the leading multimedia artists in the United States now form a comprehensive record, from the insiders’ perspectives, of the most vital component of the postmodern American art world. Passionate about postmodernism and committed to innovative creativity, Zurbrugg asks these artists probing and insightful questions. How did their work evolve? Who most influenced them? How did they assess changes in contemporary art, and what did they think of each other’s work? Which of their experiences had the most powerful effects on their creative development? What could lie ahead for American art? As these questions are answered by individual artists, the interviews also cumulatively address larger issues of artistic expression, including the idea of the avant-garde itself. The book features interviews with Kathy Acker, Charles Amirkhanian, Laurie Anderson, Robert Ashley, Beth B, David Blair, William S. Burroughs, Warren Burt, John Cage, Richard Foreman, Kenneth Gaburo, Diamanda Galás, John Giorno, Philip Glass, Brion Gysin, Dick Higgins, Jenny Holzer, Mike Kuchar, Robert Lax, Jackson Mac Low, Meredith Monk, Nam June Paik, Yvonne Rainer, Steve Reich, Rachel Rosenthal, Bill Viola, Larry Wendt, Emmett Williams, Robert Wilson, Nick Zedd, and Ellen Zweig. Introductory notes to each interview provide context and connect the work and experiences of various artists, and photographs of these artists contribute a significant visual element to the book.
